The anesthesia department provides anesthesia for medical procedures and includes specialties such as cardiac, pediatric, and pain management. Its main roles are assessing patients, giving anesthesia for surgeries and procedures, managing both short-term and long-term pain, and training medical professionals.
The department offers pre-operative assessments and anesthesia for many types of surgeries. It also provides anesthesia and sedation in areas such as endoscopy, radiology, labor and delivery, and oncology. Pain services include managing post-surgical pain and running clinics for chronic pain. The department teaches residents, fellows, students, and anesthesia technologists, and it supports trauma teams, hospital committees, research, and sedation needs throughout the hospital.
An anesthesia care team usually includes an attending anesthesiologist working with a CRNA or a resident. The department delivers general, regional, sedation, and local anesthesia. Anesthesia technologists prepare equipment, assist during procedures, and maintain supplies. General anesthesia typically follows four phases: induction, maintenance, emergence, and recovery.
